Vivid Sydney lights up

Each year when Vivid Sydney begins the city lights up.

Vivid Sydney is an annual event which started eight years ago by illuminating the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

Now it is a much bigger event, featuring over 80 light installations and state-of-the-art projections which absolutely stun with their clarity. Vivid Sydney is indeed and apt title for the event as the city now shines for 23 consecutive nights with displays that are mostly free to experience.

Sydney Opera House dazzles

The Opera House is still a central point. This year the sails of that magnificent building will celebrate the rich and diverse work of some of Australia’s most celebrated indigenous artists through an illumination called Songlines which illustrates the extraordinary connection between indigenous astronomy and the natural world.

Next door, the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney will commemorate its 200th birthday with the Garden of Light in which grand installations will dazzle and delight. One of the features will be a 60-metre long Cathedral of Light which is made from hundreds of thousands of white LEDs which radiate light from all angles.

Taronga Zoo creatures

Another Sydney institution celebrating a milestone is Taronga Zoo, which has its centenary.  For Vivid Sydney the zoo will become a temporary home for many larger-than-life animals, illuminated giant multimedia sculptures of ten critical species ranging from the Sumatran Tiger to the vividly coloured Corroboree frog.

Much of Vivid Sydney is on display for free.  It runs over 23 nights from Friday 27 May to Saturday 18 June with lights being turned on from 6pm until 11pm each night.

Illuminated fun

Whilst many of the illuminations carry a serious message, most are there just to be enjoyed, and there are many that are just pure fun.

Whilst much of the focus is on Circular Quay and the historic Rocks district, other parts of Sydney, including Martin Place, Darling Harbour and the northern suburb of Chatswood are also lit up.

Vivid Sydney also features music performances and talks and surprises all over the city.  It is a great event to experience in one of the worlds’ most beautiful and dramatic cities.
