Tall Ship Sailing with Star Clippers

strclpprsWith the rise in popularity of cruising there are now so many ships and itineraries available that choice can often be a difficult decision.

Modern cruise ships have evolved into large, floating cities.  However, if you are interested in experiencing the era of sail, there are a couple of shipping companies which still over a tall ship experience.

One of the best of these is Star Clippers.

“They have three tall ships offering cruises mainly around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean with a couple of ocean voyages thrown in for good measure.”

These ships definitely do not offer the same cramped, uncomfortable conditions that were common on sailing ships when carrying cargo was the primary interest.  Star Clippers’ three vessels are all comfortable state-of-the-art ships which boast modern amenities, excellent cuisine and fascinating itineraries.

Biggest in the fleet is Royal Clipper.

The Royal Clipper has the proud distinction of being the largest and only five-masted full-rigged sailing ship built since her predecessor, the Pruessen, was launched at the beginning of the last century. With her complement of 42 sails, Royal Clipper under full sail is indeed a splendid sight to behold.

She carries just 227 guests in luxurious style. The large open deck and three swimming pools create a wonderfully spacious and expansive outdoor environment.

“She even boasts a crow’s nest atop a mast that is furnished with a settee for spectacular viewing.”

Star Clipper and Stay Flyer, which make up the rest of the fleet, are smaller, but no less comfortable.

Star Clipper and Star Flyer are modern cruise ships in every way, created for luxury-loving passengers who also love the traditions and romance of the legendary era of sailing ships. Star Clipper and Star Flyer are both 360 feet long and each carries just 170 guests in pampered comfort.

Each ship offers spacious accommodation and expansive teak decks with two swimming pools. In fact, you’ll find that these ships offer more outdoor space per passenger than most conventional cruise ships.

Water sports are a major component of each cruise, with a from-the-ship program featuring complimentary snorkelling, kayaking, sailing and other water-based activities. Diving trips and certification classes are also on offer.

“You get a great sense of adventure as you relax below the billowing sails and feel the excitement of cutting through the sea.”

Even though they have well-prepared itineraries there can be variations as the Captain needs to follow the whim of the wind and tides so there is some flexibility on each cruise which enhances the total experience.
