Snowy Wilderness in the High Country of Australia

It would be fair to say that Australia is not renowned internationally for the quality of its traditional winter sports such as skiing. Surprisingly, Australia does have some very good snowfields, and they are located in the Snowy Mountains around Southern New South Wales and Northern Victoria.

This area is known in Australia as the High Country, and it is famous for the quality of its horsemen, thanks to the poem The Man From Snowy River, that was written by, arguably, Australia’s greatest poet A.B.`Banjo’ Paterson. The poem tells the story of an expensive racing colt which escaped into the harsh High Country bush, and of the horseman who rode down the steep slopes of the mountain at full gallop to try to catch this precious horse.

It is a poem that has legendary status in Australia as it evokes that true hardy, brave and determined spirit that is typical of many Australians.

The brumby, that was the horse of choice for those stockmen, is a short, stocky, almost untameable beast, which was perfect for negotiating the eucalyptus forests of the Snowy Mountains in both the searing heat of summer and the frigid chill of winter.

One of the places which encourages horse riding is Snowy Wilderness, near the town of Jindabyne.

The property adjoins the Kosciuszko National Park and is 7,200 rugged acres of pure wilderness offering luxurious eco-friendly accommodation, brumby watching, horse riding, fly fishing, quad biking, 4WD touring, trekking, camping, delicious fine dining cuisine, and friendly hospitality.

Snowy Wilderness is where The Man from Snowy River comes to life. The wilderness offers days of guided tours taking in breathtaking views, waterholes, waterfalls, rugged wilderness bush, volcanic peaks, and access to the Snowy River; all set within the backdrop of the unique vista of Australia’s Snowy Mountains.

Snowy Wilderness is also a sanctuary for the Australian wild horse, the Brumby. The property is also home to kangaroo, wallaby, emu, wombat, echidna, wedge-tailed eagle, and deer, as well as many varieties of native birds and flora.

There are programmes suitable for all level of riders, including rides of two to seven days duration, where you do get to ride and camp in the wild country around Mt Kosciusko.

The property is found on the Kosciuszko Alpine Way where you can wind your way into quaint country villages and towns, visit historic homesteads, enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic Main Range.
