Countries that have a capital city with a weird name – Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a land-locked country in West Africa which shares borders with six other countries.  Formerly called Upper Volta, it was re-named Burkina Faso in 1984.  Its name means “the land of upright people’ in the local languages.

The capital of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou, and it means “people who get honour and respect”.

The good citizens of Ouagadougou are called “ouagalais”, and there are about one and a half million of them who live in the city.

Ouagadougou is quite a cultural city and each year it hosts a film and television festival, which is the largest of its type in Africa.  The city also plays host to a Pan-African Music Festival and an International Theatre and Marionette Festival.

As a former French colony, the city has many wide, tree-lined boulevards and some interesting architecture.  Ouagadougou also has a vibrant night scene, with lots of clubs and good music.

It has air, rail and coach connections to many of its neighbouring countries and air connections with Europe.
